After Maharashtra, farmers protest reaches MP

Mumbai: On Friday, the strike by the Maharashtra farmers, who are demanding loan waiver, has entered the second day.

Not only in Maharashtra, but there are reports from neighbouring state Madhya Pradesh also where farmers while protesting against the state government, dumped fruits and vegetables on roads in Bhopal.

The protesting farmers alleged that they were not getting right prices for their produce.

Meanwhile, the striking Maharashtra farmers are blocking the supply of vegetables, fruits and milk to cities, due to which the prices of these essential food items have risen unreasonably in Mumbai, Nashik, Pune and Thane.

As the supply of vegetables and fruits is reduced to half of the original quantity, the cost soared by 40% in Nashik and Pune.

The seriousness of the situation could be understood from the fact that in Pune market yard, around 1,230 trucks reach with vegetable and fruits on any normal day, but due to the strike, only 125 trucks were there on Friday morning.

There were reports of farmers spilling several tonnes of fresh milk on roads and destroying stocks of fresh vegetables, tomatoes, onions from various parts of the state.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has accused the opposition parties Congress and NCP of instigating violence through the strike.

On the issues of farm loan waiver, CM Fadnavis said the government is ready to waive off loans of some 31 lakh farmers. However, this has not gone down well with the farming community as the state has 1.34 crore farmers demanding farm loan waiver.
