FIFA U-17 World Cup: Brazil vs England semifinal moved to Kolkata (Salt Lake Stadium) from Guwahati due to pitch concerns

October 23, 2017
•

The FIFA U-17 World Cup encounter between Brazil and England has been rescheduled from Guwahati’s Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium to Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan due to pitch concerns. The game will now take place in Kolkata on October 25 at 5pm.

“England said they didn’t have a problem, but Brazil weren’t willing to play in this pitch. Efforts were made to improve the condition, but the match has now been shifted. The teams will leave Guwahati today evening itself,” Assam Football Association president Hemendra Nath Brahma told Hindustan Times.

FIFA and Assam government officials held a meeting on Monday afternoon to decide on the possibility of Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium hosting the semi-final on Wednesday. But they left it to the two teams – Brazil and England – to take a call.

According to the officials, Brazil declined to play on the soggy field, which had taken a beating after the Ghana-Mali quarterfinal match on October 21 that was played in rain. Mali had adapted to the conditions but Ghana later lodged a complaint about the field.

Ghana coach Paa Kwesi Fabin was not impressed by the ground conditions and in the post-match press conference, he said, “We’ve not encountered anything like this before. I thought the game should have been abandoned and played at some another time but those who are organising said we have to play so we played.”

To make matters worse, the drainage system of the field was clogged leading to water-logging affecting more than 30% of the field. FIFA officials led by tournament director Javier Ceppi tried to find a way out, but it was all in vain.

“It is shining, and rain is unlikely now. We have two more days to go to make the field ready,” Sanjib Gohain Baruah, secretary of the sports department told HT earlier in the day.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal too had Pawan Hans involved for drying up the field. A helicopter hovered over the field for 45 minutes but the rotor could not do the job.

“Everyone tried their best but nature reigned. After four days of continuous rain, the soil became soft. The two teams arrived in the morning but are leaving for Kolkata tonight,” Anand Prakash Tiwari, a key member of the World Cup organising committee said.

Whatever hopes the officials had of conducting the match evaporated after forecast of rain from the meteorologists. The weathermen underlined the possibility of rain on Tuesday night and 60% precipitation on Wednesday morning, the scheduled day of the semifinal.

England reached the semifinals after thrashing USA 4-1 thanks to a hattrick from striker Rhian Brewster while Brazil came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in the other quarterfinal.

Independence Day 2017 "will not be celebrated" specified way in Bengal schools : Mamata Government

August 12, 2017
•

The Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal administration has got into a direct confrontation with the centre over Independence Day celebrations scheduled for next week.

Amidst the raging controversy over BJP ruled Uttar Pradesh government's diktat making it compulsory for Madrasa students to sing the national song "Vande Mataram" on I-day, the Bengal government has decided to suspend all such school programmes on that day.

Issuing an "urgent" directive to all District Project Officers in-charge of the Sarva Shikha Mission in the state, the Bengal government has asked schools to "stop all preparations for celebrating Independence Day 2017" in accordance with the specifications mentioned by the union Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD).

The MHRD school education department had earlier issued a circular on July 25 to education secretaries of all states had specified "additional activities" to be undertaken by schools under the Sarva Shiksha Mission to celebrate Independence Day in a "befitting manner".

According to the circular, schools were requested to organise nine prescribed activities between August 8 and 15th with an objective to "create festive and patriotic mood across the nation". These include quiz and debate competitions on the theme of India's freedom struggle, patriotic slogan writing competitions, organizing Prabhat Pheris and marches, film screenings showcasing India's progress and taking unity and Swachhta pledges.

However, taking exception to the centre's circular, the Bengal school education department issued the notice on Friday, barely 72 hours before 15th August stating that Independence Day 2017 "will not be celebrated" in the manner specified by the Modi government.

Blue Whale challenge: Bengal boy found dead, Doon kid stopped from killing self

August 12, 2017
•

A class 10 boy in West Bengal killed himself on Saturday while a class 5 student in Dehradun was stopped from taking the extreme step by his school authorities on Friday.

According to people in the know, both played Blue Whale Challenge, the lethal online game which provokes players to do daring, self-destructive tasks for 50 days before taking the "winning" step of killing themselves.

In Bengal, Ankan Dey choked himself to death by covering his head with a plastic bag tied tightly around his neck with a nylon cord, in the bathroom of his home in Anandpur town of West Midnapore district.

"He returned from school on Saturday and sat in front of the computer. When his mother (Sampa) called him for lunch, he said he will first have bath. When he did not emerge from the bathroom for quite some time, we broke open the door and found him lying on the floor motionless (around 4pm). We rushed him to the hospital where he was declared dead," said Gopinath Dey, Ankan's father.
Ankan's friends told police that he played Blue Whale Challenge, said Anandpur police superintendent Bharati Ghosh, adding that police are now probing the angle.

In Dehradun, authorities of a popular school stopped a class 5 student from taking his life on Friday, after he confessed to playing the game.

The confession came after the school principal confronted him for his unusual behaviour: he was "standing alone" in the corridor while other kids were playing and "looked depressed" although his class teacher confirmed that he was "a very playful boy".

After initial hesitation, the boy opened up and said he was into the game. Shocked, the school authorities immediately called his parents.

"The boy was very restless, and admitted in front of his parents that he was into Blue Whale online gaming. He also told that his friends in school told him about the game," a school functionary said, requesting not to reveal the name of the student and the school.

She said his mother admitted about his strange behaviour recently, but expressed ignorance about the online games he played.

Both the boy and the parents were counselled.

This is the first time Blue Whale Challenge victims have come to light in West Bengal and Uttarakhand.

A 14-year-old Mumbai boy, who jumped off the terrace of his home on August 1, is believed to be the first Indian casualty of the game that is also responsible for a suicide bid by an Indore schoolboy and another going missing in Pune this week, besides scores of teenager deaths around the world.
The players have to film each step/task and share the proof with gaming instructors, but are not supposed to tell anyone outside.

Cyber experts and psychologists have advised parents to strictly monitor teenagers hooked on to dangerous online games such as the Blue Whale Challenge.

The game starts as a challenge for teenagers, but soon becomes an addiction as they derive a thrill by winning the initial easy levels, according to Indore-based psychologist Rekha Arya.

Bid to traffic 4 girls from Jalpaiguri tea gardens foiled

August 03, 2017
•

Presence of mind along with prompt action by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) saved 4 girls including a juvenile from being trafficked from the tea gardens of Jalpaiguri in North Bengal. Two traffickers were also arrested in connection with this incident.

On Wednesday night, RPF personnel while conducting checks at the Jalpaiguri Road Station came across the 4 girls along with two men. The RPF personnel started questioning them. RPF officers questioned the girls separately. Their statements did not match with each other further raising doubts.

It was then the turn of the two men to be questioned. Interrogation revealed that these two men were attempting to traffic the 4 girls under the pretext of taking them to attend a marriage ceremony. The two were arrested. Past records showed that these two were involved in human trafficking luring girls with job offers.

While two of the girls hail from Karala ValleyTea Estate, the other two are from Damdim Tea Estate.

One of the trafficker's Chandra Kumar (30 years) also hails from Damdim. The other Bablu Sahu resides at Madhubani in Bihar. They were handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP.)

'Initially the traffickers claimed that they were accompanying the girls who were going to attend a wedding in Siliguri. We checked their bags. The bags contained documents which revealed that they were taking the girls to Delhi. Interrogation revealed that they had offered lucrative jobs to the girls' stated Aditya Kumar Meena, Sub Inspector, RPF.

They had planned to travel to Delhi by the Brahmaputra Express which travels from Dibrugarh to Delhi. They were scheduled to board the train at 10.40 pm from the Jalpaiguri Rail Gate station. However they were nabbed before they could board the train.

'At present migration is posing the greatest challenge as persons migrating are the most vulnerable o trafficking' stated Noreen Dunne, educationist and social worker.

According to National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) reports 15 districts of West Bengal are highly vulnerable to migration. In North Bengal the Jalpaiguri district has the highest rate of out migration. 'Closed tea gardens coupled with instability mainly political unrest is causing greater migration' feels Dunne.

Not for separate Gorkhaland state, BJP clarifies

June 27, 2017
•

The BJP on Tuesday said that it does not support its ally Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's demand for a separate state comprising Darjeeling and parts of north Bengal but called for addressing the region's cultural and political concerns.

Its chief Amit Shah, who arrived here following a two-day tour of Puducherry, met party leaders, including general secretary and Bengal in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya.

A BJP leader, however, played down the meeting's import, saying Shah routinely meets party leaders and it should not be linked with the issue.

Earlier in the day, Vijayvargiya told reporters that his party does not support the demand of a separate state and blamed the state's Mamata Banerjee government for triggering a crisis by undermining the Gorkha Territorial Administration. He said the cultural and political concerns of the people in the region needed to be addressed and the BJP was for empowering the GTA and taking other measures.

Party sources said a separate state of Gorkhaland, as is the GTA's demand, would create security concerns due to its location, it shares borders with Nepal, and would be economically unfeasible too.

They said a delegation could meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh, asking him to take measures to address the concerns of the people in the region.

Indrani alleges she was beaten up in Byculla jail, moves court

Sheena Bora murder case accused Indrani Mukerjea, booked for rioting in a women's prison here along with other inmates, today moved a court alleging that she was beaten up by the jail officials after the death of a convict sparked a protest in the prison.

Taking note of her complaint, a CBI court, which is hearing the Sheena murder case, directed the prison authorities to produce Indrani before it tomorrow.

The former media executive's lawyer Gunjan Mangla filed an application in the court saying when she went to meet Indrani she told her that she was beaten up by the jail officials after the death of the woman prisoner.

"She showed me her bruise marks and injuries which were very prominent on her hands, legs and head," the lawyer claimed in the application.

Gunjan said Indrani also said that she was verbally abused by jail officials and the superintendent and was threatened of sexual assault for protesting against the death in jail.

Following the death of Manju Govind Shette on Friday, the enraged inmates rose in protest on Saturday, some of them went up to the prison's terrace while others made a bonfire of newspapers and documents inside the premises to express their anger.

Later, the Nagpada police booked nearly 200 inmates of the Byculla jail, including Indrani, for rioting, unlawful assembly, assault on a public servant and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Gunjan said Indrani requested her to bring the incident before the court and seek her production to lodge a complaint against the jail officials.

"She informed me that several inmates want to give their statements against the jail officials who were involved in the incident," the lawyer said.

When judge J C Jagdale asked the lawyer if Indrani wants to file an FIR, she said "yes".
An official from the prison department had alleged that Indrani "instigated" the inmates by asking them to shun food and "use their children as shields" when prison staffers tried to stop them from agitating and gathering together.

Meanwhile, police today said that Manju, whose death sparked protests in the prison, was allegedly tortured and a stick was inserted in her private parts.

Manju (45) died at the government-run J J Hospital on Friday night after allegedly being beaten up by a woman official of the jail on June 23.

"These allegations are part of the FIR filed against the jail staff. We are probing the matter," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-3), Akhilesh Singh told PTI.

The Nagpada police, investigating the case, have filed an offence of murder against the jail staff.

"We are seeking information from eyewitnesses and other inmates in this connection," a police official said.

Declining to comment on the matter, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) Bhushankumar Upadhyay said, "Police have registered an offence against the jail staff and an investigation is on."
Six jail staffers were placed under suspension and police registered a case under IPC section 302 (punishment for murder) against them.

The jail, located in the heart of the city, houses around 251 inmates.

Sikkim tourism benefiting from Darjeeling unrest

June 20, 2017
•

Gangtok, Jun 20: The unrest in Darjeeling in the peak tourist season has come as a boon for Sikkim with tourists thronging the neighbouring hill state instead of Darjeeling in view of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha agitation.

'The tension in Darjeeling has led to a sudden boom in the tourism industry here,' Secretary, Sikkim Tourism, C Zangpo said.

The GJM agitation in Darjeeling led to the cancellation of bookings by domestic and foreign tourists in the 'Queen of hill stations' and make travel arrangements in Sikkim, he said.

'Tourism related establishments in Gangtok are currently packed with customers and have full bookings in the coming days as well,' Zangpo states.

The Sikkim Tourism secretary said that almost all the tourists who are now visiting Sikkim were supposed to visit Darjeeling on the second leg of their journey or had been there before reaching Sikkim. Travel operators, however, are worried as it is difficult to manage so many tourists at a time, and the secretary also echoed similar views.

'We have asked travel operators and hotels to try and accommodate as many tourists as they can without compromising on the service standards as any mismanagement at this time could give a bad name to the tourism industry,' Zangpo said.

Hotels presently have bookings upto mid-July and they have now started cancelling new booking enquiries, one of the travel operators said. Santanu Bose, a tourist from Kolkata, said, 'We had been in Darjeeling for holidaying when all this happened. Our travel agent immediately contacted operators in Sikkim and we were lucky to get reservations.'

Many tourists, however, had to cut short their visit and return, Bose told PTI at the Mall here.

'We spent only one night in Darjeeling. We are enjoying our stay here now,' he said.

As the tourists from Sikkim were now being provided Sikkim Nationalised Transport buses every day with security, they are feeling secure that they will not get stuck in the hills because of the ongoing bandh.

Since June 8, Darjeeling has witnessed clashes between GJM activists and police over the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state. Sikkim government sources they had requested their West Bengal counterpart on Sunday to provide security to vehicles passing through NH 31A in Darjeeling district in view of the agitation.

The West Bengal government had assured them that security would be provided to Sikkim-bound vehicles and the police would carry out extensive patrolling on the highway. The 92 km long NH 31A connects Sevoke in Darjeeling district to Gangtok and is considered the lifeline of Sikkim. Around 30 km of the highway passes through West Bengal.

Gorkhaland protest effect: Now, Bodos renew demand for separate state in Assam

June 19, 2017
•

As the hill town of Darjeeling and neighbouring places in West Bengal are witnessing bandh and violence for several days now, in neighbouring Assam, the indigenous Bodo tribes have once again renewed their demand for a separate state, Bodoland.

While extending their support to the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha's agitation for 'Gorkhaland', the Bodo groups in Assam issued a statement saying the demands for Bodoland and Gorkhaland are 'historically and constitutionally legitimate' but the Centre is apathetic towards these demands. The groups have asked the Centre to intervene immediately to end the violence in Darjeeling.

The statement, jointly issued by the All Bodo Students' Union, People's Joint Committee for Bodoland Movement and the NDFB (P), added that movements demanding creation of separate states gained momentum in the country after the UPA government created Telangana state in 2009.

'The outburst of tension in Darjeeling is nothing but an unwarranted outcome of the autocratic rule of the West Bengal government and the Centre's negligence towards the problem,' the statement said.
It added, 'We condemn the unprovoked atrocious act by West Bengal police and their torture of unarmed civilians on the streets of Darjeeling.'

The agitation in Darjeeling took a violent turn when three GJM supporters were allegedly killed in a police firing on Saturday. On the same day, several policemen sustained severe injuries because of alleged attacks by protesters.

On Sunday, during the seventh day of the indefinite bandh called by the GJM, an uneasy calm prevailed in the hill town. The last rites of the three protesters, who died on Saturday, were performed on Sunday after a procession was carried out by the GJM members on the streets of Darjeeling.

Darjeeling unrest: 4 killed as GJM protests for Gorkhaland, CM Mamata claims 'terrorist links' spurring violence

June 17, 2017
•

Four people were allegedly killed in police firing and a security official was critically injured as a violent agitation for a separate Gorkha state turned the picturesque hill station of Darjeeling into a battle zone on Saturday.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee denied that police fired on protesters but did not say how they died.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which rules the semi-autonomous Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, said four of its supporters were killed in Darjeeling's Singamari, where the party's supporters attacked security forces with bricks and bottles, in one of the worst violence since the flare-up on June 8.

TV footage showed forces smoke billowing from tear gas shells and security forces firing from semi-automatic weapons.

"Police did not open fire. This is absolutely wrong," Banerjee said in Kolkata even as she blamed the GJM of having links with militant outfits based in northeast states as well with foreign countries.

"There is a terrorist brain behind this hooliganism and vandalism. We have got clues that this has terrorist connections. They (GJM) have connections with underground insurgent groups of the northeast...," she said.

Kiran Tamang, an assistant commandant of the India Reserve Battalion was stabbed on the back with a traditional Gorkha knife known as 'khukri' as security forces struggled to contain thousands-strong mobs that torched police vehicles and ransacked government property, shouting anti-government slogans. His condition was said to be critical.

Scenes across Darjeeling and nearby Ghoom resembled a battlefield with charred buses, police vehicles and bricks strewn on the road.

Officials said Tamang was among 35-odd security personnel injured in the violence, officials said, amid rising concerns that Darjeeling might lurch back to the unrest of the 80s, when hundreds of people died in a crackdown on the statehood movement.

The present crisis was sparked by fears Bengali being imposed in schools in the GJM-administered areas where a majority of the people are Nepali-speaking Gorkhas.

Though the government clarified that Bengali will be an optional subject, the GJM refused to back down and instead revived the almost 100-year-old demand for a separate Gorkhaland. A raid on the GJM's office this week fanned anger.

Experts see the agitation as the GJM's efforts to revive its political fortunes after the Trinamool made history by registering its first victory in a hill municipality in Mirik.

GJM president Bimal Gurung, who is in hiding, issued a video-message asking all Gorkhaland supporters to "give a fitting reply to what West Bengal government did".

The GJM also called a 12-hour shutdown on Sunday in the Dooars, a region straddling three plains districts, posing a fresh challenge to the Trinamool government. An indefinite shutdown is continuing in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.

The GJM ruled out any possibility of talks with the Mamata government, saying it will only negotiate with the Centre. The BJP is an ally of the GJM.

Mamata offered to hold a dialogue if the GJM called off the shut down, that has paralysed the region's money-spinner tourism industry. Hundreds of tourists have left the hills since the violence started.

The chief minister, who saw a "deep-rooted conspiracy", also announced an all-party meeting on June 22 in Siliguri to discuss the issue.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Banerjee on Saturday, officials said in Delhi.

Darjeeling crisis takes new turn, GNLF snaps ties with TMC

June 14, 2017
•

The political crisis in the Darjeeling hills took a new turn today with the GNLF breaking its alliance with the TMC after having joined hands with agitation spearhead GJM, saying the party has been fighting for Gorkhaland since its inception.

Emboldened by the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) aligning with his party, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung threatened to intensify the movement for a separate Gorkhaland even as the indefinite shutdown in the government and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) offices entered its third day.

The GNLF, formed by the late firebrand leader Subhash Ghisingh, had led a violent movement for Gorkhaland in the eighties, following which the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) was formed.

Gurung broke away from the GNLF and formed the GJM in 2007 and subsequently emerged as the dominant force in the hills.

"The GNLF, since its inception in the eighties under the leadership Subhash Ghisingh, has been fighting for Gorkhaland. Our ultimate goal is to achieve a separate state of Gorkhaland," Neraaj Zimba, spokesperson of the GNLF, told PTI.

He said the alliance with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was never a political or ideological one, but an electoral tie-up.

The TMC is trying to deflect attention from the real demand of Gorkhaland through "doles and charity", Zimba said.

No untoward incident was reported from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik during the day and despite the bandh call, the state government offices remained open.

Vehicles plied as the police remained on high alert and patrolled the streets.

Banks and most ATMs were closed, but shops and markets were open.

Most of the tourists have left the hills and hotels were empty. Hotel owners told the tourists, who still remained, that they could stay, but at their own risk.

GJM workers gathered in front of the food and supply office in Kurseong but left following police intervention.
The GJM, along with other hill parties, took out rallies in several areas of the hills demanding Gorkhaland.

Police pickets and barricades were placed in front of the government and the GTA offices, in which the GJM is enforcing an indefinite shutdown which entered its third day today, and at various entry exit points of the hills.

The Rapid Action Force (RAF) and a sizeable number of women police personnel were also deployed.

The Centre had yesterday despatched 600 paramilitary personnel to assist the West Bengal government restore normalcy in the violence-hit area.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Governor K N Tripathi in Kolkata and briefed him about the situation in the hills.

The state government has removed Donbosco Lepcha, the secretary of the GTA, and appointed C Murugan as the new secretary, a notification issued by the Personnel and Administrative Reforms and e-Governance Department, yesterday, said.

The state government had recently replaced GTA Principal Secretary Ravi Inder Singh and brought in Barun Ray.

Justifying his party's stand to break its alliance with the TMC, Zimba said, "The Gorkhas were ditched by successive state governments. We now feel that the atmosphere in the hills is fully conducive for the creation of a separate state.

"The GJM is also an ally of the NDA, which is in power at the Centre."

He said, "It is true that we have differences among the players in the hills, but for the sake of the people we have decided to keep aside our differences and fight for Gorkhaland."

Gurung, who threatened to intensify the movement for Gorkhaland, asked tourists not to visit the hill station as they might be inconvenienced.

"I will not welcome the tourists because they may face problems. There will be agitation, bandh in the hills...
"Indefinite bandh has been called in the government and the GTA offices. The movement for Gorkhaland will be intensified," he said.

Gurung said that he will shortly resign from the post of the GTA chief executive but the GJM MLAs and the municipal councillors will not step down.

State Tourism minister Gautam Deb slammed Gurung for his statement.

"Darjeeling is not anybody's property. He should not make such utterances. None is above the law," he said.
Senior GNLF leader N B Chetri earlier said, "Why so many questions are raised over joining hands with the GJM? The TMC on several occasions had joined hands with the BJP and the Congress. In politics such things do happen."

He said, "We won't allow an opportunist political party like the TMC to benefit from the infightig among various parties in the hills."

Kolkata's Dancing Cop Who Makes People Smile

June 13, 2017
•

Commuters look out in surprise from windows of cars and buses. Some passers-by occasionally stop to click pictures. The subject of their interest is a man who literally makes managing busy traffic on a bustling east Kolkata road a song and a dance.

Braving the heat, Ashok Gupta, 59, in a fluorescent orange jacket and helmet, shows off his innovative dance steps while directing vehicles near Gate No 4 at Rajarhat's Eco Tourism Park for 12 hours a day, six days a week, managing to draw a smile or two from passing commuters.

A resident of Hooghly district's Dankuni, Gupta is not a traffic cop. He has been appointed by a private security company that has outsourced the job of flagging through heavy vehicles supplying material for the ongoing Garia-Airport Metro railway project.

According to Gupta, people's smiles keep him going, notwithstanding the hectic nature of his job against a meagre pay cheque.

Some people ask me why I do it. In today's busy life, people don't get enough time or reason to smile. So I'm trying to make people smile through my dance steps. The more I see people smiling and appreciating (what I do), the more I feel encouraged. While managing traffic under the scorching sun for so long, this music and dance steps leave me energised. Ashok Gupta

Gupta, an avid fan of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, constantly plays old Hindi numbers like "Chala jata hu... Kisi ke dhun pe" and "Ek larki peheli baar" on his cell phone.

I face no issues in managing traffic while dancing. I just connect the headphones of my mobile to my ears and get lost in the music. Ashok Gupta

He has been doing the task for seven years now. But such is Gupta's passion for the work that he goes beyond his assigned responsibility.

While he is supposed to pass the heavy vehicles ferrying materials for the metro project, Gupta has proactively taken up the responsibility of managing the general traffic as well.

All traffic sergeants in this area are happy with me. They've asked me to keep doing what I'm doing. They say I am doing a good job of managing traffic. Ashok Gupta

The traffic marshal claimed he has danced on the road before, but never got any recognition. "It is the love of the people of Rajarhat that has really encouraged me in my dance," he said.

"Some people, who frequently travel through this place, tell me they feel something is missing when I'm not there," he continued.

Sharing Gupta's enthusiasm, his young helper Biswajit Saha claimed that the amount of effort he puts into his work inspires others in the locality.

We are proud of him. The way he works for 12 hours daily with a smile on his face, motivates youngsters like us. My sons initially objected to my dancing and said I am ruining the family prestige. But after seeing the people's response, they are happy now. They say 'you are a great man'. Ashok Gupta

Locals simply adore Gupta. "I've seen him before. It is wonderful how he is spreading love and happiness with his dance. Whenever I pass through this point, my eyes automatically turn to him," said IT employee Santanu Paul.

Posing with a bunch of school kids for a selfie, Gupta said a positive attitude to life and enjoying his work are his twin secrets.

"I want to tell today's generation that whatever they do in life, they should do it from the heart and enjoy it. There is nothing like getting pleasure and satisfaction out of your livelihood," the dancing marshal added.

Kolkata to get India's first underwater Metro

June 11, 2017
•

Kolkata will soon have an underwater Metro which will pass through tunnels several feet under the Hooghly. The first underwater transportation tunnel of India is ready with the second one nearing completion.

The Kolkata Metro transportation tunnel is unique to India because never before in the history of the country has a tunnel been made under a flowing river.

The tunnel has been constructed 30 metres below riverbed, just a few metres away from the famous Howrah Bridge, built in the last century to connect Howrah and Kolkata.

There aren't even roads that are under a river in India making the Kolkata Metro tunnel a complete technology marvel which will see trains will chugging through it every two and a half minutes.
"It will be connecting two main terminals: Howrah and Sealdah - each of which has a footfall of about 10-12 lakh passengers per day. These type of tunnel-boring machines, which we call 'earth pressure balancing tunnel boring machines', have been used for the first time in Eastern India," said Satish Kumar, Managing Director of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.

Another interesting point is that more than 10 lakh tonne of mud has been dug out for the construction of this tunnel. The tunnel-boring machines were used for the first time in eastern India.
The entire 16.6-kilometre stretch of the first tunnel is ready. The second tunnel is yet to be completed. Of the entire length, 10.8 kms is underground and around one kilometre is underwater..
"For tunnelling below the river, the water tightness, waterproofing, and the design of gaskets were the major challenges, because the tunnel is being constructed for a service of 120 years, so we cannot afford any water leakage during service," said Kumar.

Tunnelling cannot be done for long hence the homework was done for almost an year and then the machines and equipment shifted to the location for final implementation and execution of the plan. The material used gives it immunity to survive quakes in seismic zone 3, in which Kolkata falls.
The use of the standard gauge makes it a unique one. It is the latest technology that has been utilised to ensure that the tracks have sharp curves, keeping in mind that this tunnel passes under a lot of heritage buildings.

The heritage buildings had to be protected, and the work was not supposed to stop even for a day in these buildings.

Puja Shukla, a local resident said, "I think it's a good thing which is happening, because the Metro is the cheapest and the fastest form of transport, used by a large number of people which will also hopefully ease traffic on the surface. This will be very beneficial in connecting people from all over Kolkata."

Also, unrest was also seen at Darjeeling in Siliguri and Kaljmpong. The GJM accused the TMC government of trying to disrupt peace in Darjeeling by its 'divide and rule policy' and called a 12-hour shutdown in the hills tomorrow.

Asked about the GJM's agitation, Mamata Banerjee said, 'They have the democratic right. Let them do it. They have no issue. Let there be competition for development,' she said.

GJM protests started after it lost to TMC in the last civic polls and it was after three decades any party from plain area has formed board at Mirik.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee announced that a new state Secretariat will be set up in Darjeeling district and the new building named after Mount Everest summitteer Tenzing Norgay. Virtually throwing a challenge to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the state administration, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha President Bimal Gurung on Thursday projected himself as the 'Chief Minister of the hills', saying his writ ran in the area.

'She is showing her power. She is the Chief Minister of Bengal. Then, I am also the elected member (of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration or GTA), the Chief Minister of the hills.

'if her coercive tactics run there (plains), then my coercive tactics run here (the hills),' Gurung said on a day the army marched into Darjeeling after thousands of angry GJM activists indulged in arson and threw bombs and stones at police, injuring 15.

As many as 12,000 tourists were stranded in the hill station due to the violence. Banerjee is now in Darjeeling, where her Cabinet met during the day. It was the first time in 45 years that the Cabinet meeting was held in Darjeeling.

Indian Super League's new rules to finally make Indian football fans happy?

As more and more teams pull out of the crucial Asian Football Confederation (AFC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur to discuss over a new roadmap in Indian football, the Indian Super League (ISL) have brought out a new set of rules to lure the football fans, it seems.

Joining Bengaluru FC and Aizawl FC in the meeting will be Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, who have decided to attend Wednesday's meeting after several negotiations. However, the likes of FC Pune City and NorthEast United FC and even possibly Chennaiyin FC are giving the meeting a miss.

At a time when we are debating a possible I-League and ISL merger, comes the news of some key members pulling out, making the important AFC meeting look like a complete farce and it also in a way, embarrasses India at the Asian level, for their lack of taking responsibilities.

"On Wednesday, the AFC will hear views of all stakeholders and then they will take some time to process it. I'll be surprised if any major announcement is made on the day," said an official on conditions of anonymity, to the New Indian Express.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) supremo Praful Patel, too, has decided to skip the event and has asked AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das, to be present alongside I-League CEO Sunando Dhar.

At a time like this, Goal has reported that a new set of rules are being brought to effect in the ISL. The question remains now if these will indeed help the lucrative Indian football league get a recognition from the AFC, finally.

The reported new rules :

5 : The foreign players in the starting 11 of an ISL side has been brought down, from six to five.

17 : The ISL franchisees can sign up to 17 Indian players now. The earlier cut-off figure was 14.

2 : The ISL franchisees need to sign at least two U-21 players/

Marquee no more : The marquee players rule has been scrapped from the ISL 2017-18 season.

There can be two reasons for this. Firstly, the marquee players have not been at their best in the past three years. Secondly, the ISL has grabbed a lot of eyeballs in the last three editions with the presence of Del Pieros and the Roberto Carlos-es.

So, from now, it could only be about Indian players and their overall growth.

Mamata says her govt will not support GST in its present form

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday claimed financial emergency is still on in India and reiterated that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill is not acceptable to the state government in its present form.

'Amit Mitra (State Finance Minister) is very annoyed. Our state Chief Secretary will also discuss in details. We have decided to send a strong letter to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley,' Banerjee said while chairing an administrative review meeting at Pailan in South 24 Parganas.

'We will not support the GST Bill in its present form where the unorganised sector and poor people would face a lot of problems. They will be in acute crisis. The (Centre) will have to rectify,' she said.

The Trinamool Congress supremo's comments came a day after she threatened that Mitra would resign as Chairman of the Empowered Committee on the GST if it continued to 'ignore' him.

'The Centre is not listening to us. They are taking unilateral decisions. We know that the unorganised sector and the small scale industry here would face a lot of problems. The film and the book industry would also be in trouble after the bill is implemented,' Banerjee alleged.

'We have given a strong letter to the Centre about this. Our Chief Secretary (Basudeb Banerjee) is also writing a letter to them as he understands these issues well,' Banerjee said while interacting with businessmen during an administrative meeting in Hooghly district on Thursday.

While the Centre has decided to roll out the GST regime on July 1, the state government has argued that it was not ready and that small and medium-scale industries were not equipped to handle the new tax regime.

The state government has also sought reduction in the proposed rates for a number of products.

Th West Bengal assembly has not passed the state GST Bill yet.

Banerjee also announced that the state will consider January-December as financial year from now.

Referring to the Income Tax Department warning people against indulging in cash transaction of Rs 2 lakh or more, Banerjee said: 'I saw the advertisement today (on Friday). That means financial emergency is still on. Nobody has any freedom... even if you earn, you can't do anything. You can't withdraw money (as per your will).'

Banerjee's Trinamool Congress has been on the warpath with the Centre over demonetisation.

On Thursday, she criticised the Centre for the decline in GDP growth, saying her apprehension of 'drastic decline in productivity' due to demonetisation has proven true.

CPI(M) MP Ritabrata Banerjee suspended for three months

CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee was on Friday suspended from his party for three months over his "lavish lifestyle" which according to the party was in violation of its norms.

The decision was taken by the West Bengal State Committee, which also decided to set up a committee to probe into allegations against the 38-year-old MP who was in the eye of a storm after a party sympathiser criticised him on social media for using an Apple watch and Mont Blanc.

Sources said the action was taken against Banerjee for not adhering to the Party Plenum decisions which had warned against the lavish lifestyle of cadres at different levels. They said it was not just the gadgets episode but there were complaints about his lifestyle that prompted the committee to take disciplinary action.

In February, the party had also cautioned Banerjee who complained against the party sympathiser to his employer, a Bengaluru-based start-up, and demanded that action be taken against him.

The party sympathiser was reacting to a photograph Banerjee posted on social media, asking him what was the means for the MP to buy the costly gadgets.

The party had warned its cadres and leaders about opulent lifestyle at the Kolkata Plenum in 2015 when it acknowledged complaints about "lifestyle, corrupt practices and persistent violations of Communist norms" by "certain comrades".

The report adopted at the Plenum said that the atmosphere created by "liberalisation policies and practices of bourgeois political parties" were influencing a section of comrades. It had also talked about reports from many states about complaints of domestic violence against party members.

"There are also complaints against Party members about their lavish lifestyle, spending beyond their known sources of income for building houses which are far above the minimum needs required, spending large amounts on weddings of children, organizing festivities on a lavish scale etc. Eight state committees reported receiving such complaints," the report said.
